Dr Peter McNaney CBEChair of the Board

Peter McNaney has a wealth of experience in senior leadership roles in Northern Ireland gained in both executive and non-executive roles in corporate governance, shaping strategy and effective implementation, leading change and successfully facilitating complex partnerships.

He practised as a corporate lawyer for 20 years before serving as Chief Executive of Belfast City Council between 2001-14. During his time in the Council, he led a large-scale change programme which transformed the Council’s financial health and delivery capacity resulting in the creation of a £400m City Investment Strategy.

As a non-executive, he was Chair of the Governing body of Belfast Metropolitan College and oversaw the building and move to the Titanic campus. He has also served as a member of the Board of Invest NI.

He is presently the senior independent director and Chair of the Audit Committee of Northern Ireland Water and recently stood down as Chair of the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust after nine years.

He is currently a member of the Council of the University of Ulster and is Chair of its Greater Belfast Development Committee which is responsible for oversight of the completion of its new £350m inner city campus.

Peter EwingBoard Member

Peter Ewing is an experienced director of finance and electricity regulation and leader of business change. With over 25 years’ experience, Peter has been closely involved in the transformation of the electricity industry in Northern Ireland since privatisation. He has overseen multiple price controls, capital investment, IT systems implementation and acquisitions and disposals across the electricity value chain in relation to the transmission and distribution and supply of electricity, transmission system operation, interconnectors and renewable energy projects.

He has extensive corporate governance experience gained through Board positions and played a key role in delivering corporate strategies. Peter was previously Director of Finance and Regulation at Northern Ireland Electricity and the Viridian Group, Deputy Managing Director and Director of Regulation and Market Operations at NIE Networks, and a Non-Executive Board Member and Treasurer at Radius Housing. Prior to this he was Finance Director at Moy Park.

A graduate of Manchester University and Queen’s University Belfast, Peter has completed the Advanced Management Programme at the INSEAD Business School.  Peter is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Ireland and an alumnus of the Philadelphia based Eisenhower Fellowships.
 

Angela LoveBoard Member

Angela Love has over 30 years’ experience in the GB/EU gas and electricity markets and brings extensive expertise from across most aspects of the energy system. She started her career at Scottish Power in commercial and financial roles, latterly as UK Strategy and External Affairs Manager for Scottish Power’s non-price regulated businesses - generation, trading, retail and renewables.

Angela was a consultant for 13 years, advising clients on market arrangements across gas, electricity and water and developing business strategies. Her past roles include Chair of the Gas Forum, Director of Gas, Communications and European Affairs at the Energy Networks Association and Director of Future Markets and Engagement at Elexon. Whilst at Elexon, Angela was responsible for establishing the £90m Market-wide Half Hourly Settlement Programme and directed it for more than 18 months. She is also Chair of Scottish Power’s Energy Networks Independent Net Zero Advisory Committee and has recently taken up the position of Chair of the Cadent Gas Customer Challenge Group.

Angela has a passion for consumers, in particular the vulnerable and fuel poor and has devoted a lot of time to customer wellbeing and safety. As such, she was a Trustee of the Gas Safe Charity for nine years and has been a member of Ofgem’s Stakeholder Engagement and Customer Vulnerability Panel for six years. Angela is Chair of the GB Smart Energy Code Panel and Board and an independent consultant.

Charlie Villar Board Member

Charlie Villar is an executive with finance, operations, and transformation experience. He has worked on Boards, as well as with senior officials, regulators and Ministers across Electricity, Post, Telecommunications, Broadcast Media, and Water sectors in GB, NI and Europe.

In these roles, he has developed a diverse understanding of the regulatory, economic and commercial drivers across a range of industries, and how to lead organisations through major transformations.

Charlie is a qualified accountant and has an MA in Geography from Oxford University.

Alan CampbellManaging Director

Alan Campbell is the Managing Director of SONI (System Operator Northern Ireland), the transmission system operator for Northern Ireland.

Graduating from Queen’s University Belfast with a First-Class Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering, Alan commenced his career with AstraZeneca in England. He later joined ESB, where he progressed to manage the 400MW Coolkeeragh Power Station.He joined SONI in July 2017, as Head of Grid Infrastructure Projects and Connections and was appointed Managing Director in June 2021, having undertaken the role on an interim basis from July 2020 and been appointed to the SONI Board in December 2020.

With more than 20 years’ experience, Alan is one of Northern Ireland’s most established energy leaders. He is a trusted adviser to both government and industry, as a widely acknowledged expert in the energy system in Northern Ireland

Michael BehanBoard Member

Michael Behan was appointed to the SONI Board of Directors in January 2022. Michael is also the Chief Financial Officer of EirGrid Group and has held this position since January 2022.

Kevin O'Neill Head of Commercial and Regulation

Kevin O’Neill joined SONI in October 2020, bringing more than 13 years’ regulatory experience.

Reporting to the Managing Director, Kevin is responsible for all aspects of SONI’s Commercial and Regulatory Management. Before taking up his role with SONI, Kevin held senior management positions with Northern Ireland Electricity Networks and the Utility Regulator.

Kevin has a Masters of Engineering in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (MEng) from Queen’s University Belfast. Kevin is a board member at Clanmil Housing Association.

Eimear WatsonHead of Networks

Eimear Watson has a MEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Queen’s University Belfast and started her career as an Electrical Engineer with Schlumberger Ltd., an oil and gas field service provider.

Eimear joined SONI in 2012 as a Grid Operations Planning Engineer and has since held various roles across power system planning and operations sides of the SONI business including Team Lead roles in Access Planning, Near Time, System Operations, System Support & Analysis Team and Security of Supply.

Eimear was appointed as Head of Networks NI in April 2023 with Networks NI being a newly formed team. The new team integrates four key roles in transmission system planning - system planning, connections planning, connections contract management and infrastructure deliver

Gareth BrownHead of Communications and Engagement

Gareth Brown is Head of Communications and Engagement at SONI, having been appointed in January 2023.

An award-winning communications professional, Gareth has more than ten years’ experience in corporate communications, political relations and public policy across the public, private and third sectors. Prior to his role at SONI, Gareth worked as a political adviser to the Chief Constable of the PSNI and is a former adviser in the UK Cabinet Office and Prime Minister’s Office. He is a former columnist at the Times and Belfast Telegraph newspapers and political commentator with BBC and STV.

Reporting to the Managing Director, Gareth manages SONI’s internal and external communications including media relations, digital, public and landowner engagement, political relations and strategic partnerships

Emma MorrisHead of System Operations

Emma Morris is Interim Head of System Operations at SONI. Prior to this role, she was System Operational Manager with responsibility for the real time operation of the Northern Ireland Transmission System. This included managing the Castlereagh House Control Centre.

Emma has previously held a number of senior positions in SONI, working across Operations and Innovation.

She joined SONI as a graduate in 2006 and holds a Masters in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Queen’s University Belfast

Frank O'ConnorHead of Finance and Legal

Frank O’Connor is Interim Head of Finance and Legal at SONI.

Frank brings over 20-years finance and general management experience to the role, having previously worked in senior positions for a number of Northern Ireland’s top companies including Norbrook, Moy Park and First Derivatives.

Frank is a qualified accountant, a Fellow of the Chartered Accountants Ireland and holds a diploma in Compliance, Risk and Internal Audit. He has significant experience in different financial reporting systems including managing large change and transition projects

David McKelveyHead of IT Applications

David McKelvey is Head of IT Applications in SONI and EirGrid Group. Reporting to the Chief People and Information Officer for the EirGrid Group, David is responsible for IT Applications across the Group, including the mission critical Energy Management System (EMS) and the integrated Single Electricity Market Systems.

David leads a number of teams based across Belfast and Dublin ensuring that support meets internal and external Key Performance Indicators, Service Level Agreements and Service Availability.

David holds responsibility for engagement with key stakeholders within the business and externally with support partners

David McGowanHead of Power System Insights and Research

Dave McGowan is the Head of Power System Insights and Research at SONI. He has over 20 years of experience in the electricity industry and academia.

Dave’s function is responsible for energy economics within SONI and leads on the longterm power system planning studies for the TSO at a local and at a European level. He is a member of the System Development Committee within the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSOE). He also co-ordinates SONI’s innovation and research strategy including engagement with academia and industry.

Before joining SONI, Dave worked as a research fellow in the Electric Power and Intelligent Control Centre at Queen’s University Belfast from which he holds a PhD in Engineering.

Sam Matthews Head of System Support

Dr Sam Matthews is Head of System Support in SONI and the EirGrid Group.

He has over 20 years’ experience in the UK power and gas industry. Sam joined SONI in 2013 and is currently the Head of System Services. He previously worked for National Grid, the transmission network in Great Britain, where he held a variety of commercial and technical management positions.

He has also worked for Entergy as an energy trader and for Alstom in HVDC systems. Sam holds a PhD in Power Systems Harmonics from The Queen's University of Belfast and an MBA from Warwick University

Colin CairnduffHead of Employee Relations and Workplace

Colin is Head of Employee Relations and Workplace for the EirGrid Group and SONI HR Manager. He is responsible for employee relations, compensation and benefits, payroll and pensions, policy implementation, health and safety, and the workplace..

Colin leads a team of dedicated HR professionals based in both Belfast and Dublin who provide advice and guidance to managers to support the delivery of the Group's Business Plan.

With approximately 700 employees across the Group, Employee Relations and Workplace is at the heart of the employee experience.

Alan Thomson Head of Governance, Risk and Compliance

Alan Thomson is Head of Governance, Risk and Compliance in SONI and EirGrid Group.

He is responsible for providing assurance to the Board of Directors on the adequacy and effectiveness of the systems of internal control, risk management and compliance.

Alan was appointed in 2013 and has over 25 years' experience in the areas of internal audit, risk management and corporate governance in the energy, financial services, health and public sectors. He is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors (UK & Ireland) and holds the Global IIA Qualification in Internal Audit Leadership
